Celebrating Colorado’s Game-Changing Manufacturing Investment

On my commute every day, I listen to this amazing podcast, The Best One Yet, that features the top three business stories you need to know. The show’s hosts Nick and Jack often remind its listeners that in business it’s crucial to “celebrate the wins.” With the constant barrage of negative news and current events, it’s been my experience that we can easily overlook this important ritual. That being said, this edition of Obvious Omissions is dedicated to Colorado and Aurora, who received some big news this month that deserves our attention and, yes, our celebration.

Philip Morris International (PMI) announced a monumental $600 million investment to open a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Aurora, Colorado. This facility, set to produce Swedish Match ZYN oral nicotine pouches, is expected to create 500 direct jobs with an average annual salary of around $90,000. PMI projects an ongoing annual economic impact of $550 million for Colorado.

Governor Jared Polis hailed the announcement, stating: “We are really excited to help make Colorado the very best state to do business in.” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman echoed this, calling it “an extraordinary day for the city of Aurora” and noting the millions in tax revenue the project will generate annually.

It’s rare to see a governor, a major international company, and a local community align on a project of this scale. Psychologically, acknowledging positive developments boosts morale and motivates further progress. Socially, it reinforces the idea that Colorado is still an attractive place for business and innovation. It’s a testament to our state’s appeal, our workforce’s capabilities, and our ability to attract major investments.

Here’s the bottom line: We must celebrate our victories, both big and small. The investment by PMI in Aurora is a significant win for Colorado’s economy, and recognizing such achievements is vital for maintaining momentum and fostering a positive environment for future growth and building stronger, more resilient communities.
